Earshot: Privacy Policy

Last updated: 10 August 2026

The short version: Earshot collects nothing about you and no analytics. Translation happens entirely inside your own browser using a model stored on your own computer, so your conversations never travel anywhere. The extension makes exactly one network request in its life, and only if you buy the paid unlock: a single check that your licence key is valid. Nothing else ever leaves your machine.

What Earshot does

When you are on Discord in your browser and Earshot is switched on, it reads the text of messages already displayed on your screen, works out what language they are in, and translates them using Chrome's built-in on-device Translator and Language Detector. The translation is added underneath the original message in your browser window and is not stored anywhere.

What Earshot collects

Nothing. Message text is processed in memory to produce a translation and then discarded. Recent translations are held in memory briefly so a repeated message does not need translating twice, and that disappears when you close or reload the tab. No message content is ever written to a server, logged, or shared, on the free tier or the paid one.

Recent translations, kept on your device

If you have the paid unlock, Earshot keeps a short local history of recent translations so you can look back at what somebody said earlier without scrolling the whole channel. It holds the last 120, it lives in your browser's local storage on your own machine, and it is never transmitted anywhere. You can clear it or switch it off entirely from the popup at any time, and uninstalling the extension deletes it.

The one network request, and only if you pay

If you buy the paid unlock for Reddit, X, Telegram Web and WhatsApp Web, the extension needs to check that your licence key is genuine. When you press Unlock, and only then, it sends your licence key to a small server I run at earshot-licence.simi-enquiries.workers.dev, which asks the payment provider (Payhip) whether that key is valid and returns a yes or a no.

That request contains your licence key and nothing else. No message content, no browsing information, no identifiers. The payment provider's reply includes details such as the buyer's email address, and my server deliberately discards all of it and passes back only a yes or a no, because neither the extension nor I have any business holding it. Nothing is logged. The result is stored on your own device so the check never needs repeating.

Translation itself never touches the network, on any tier, ever. If you never buy the unlock, the extension never makes a single network request in its entire life.

What is stored on your device

Two settings only: whether Earshot is switched on, and which language you want messages translated into. These live in Chrome's local extension storage on your own machine. Separately, Chrome itself downloads and stores translation language packs, which is a browser feature rather than something Earshot controls or can access.

What Earshot never does

It does not read or modify your message box, send messages, react, join servers, or perform any action on Discord on your behalf. It does not access your Discord account details, credentials, direct message history beyond what is visible on screen, or any other site. It has no network permissions and makes no outbound requests of any kind.

Permissions, in plain words

Storage is used to remember your settings and, if you have bought the unlock, that your licence was accepted. Access to the messaging sites listed in the store listing is required so the extension can read the messages on those pages in order to translate them, which is its entire function. Access to the licence server is used only for the single key check described above.

Third parties

Earshot is not affiliated with Discord, Reddit, X, Telegram, WhatsApp or Google. Using those sites is subject to their own privacy policies exactly as it would be without this extension. If you buy the paid unlock, the payment itself is handled entirely by Payhip under their privacy policy, and I never see your card details.

Changes

If any of this ever changes, this page will be updated before the change ships and it will be stated plainly in the store listing. Collecting nothing is the point of the product, not a temporary position.
